The seven young doctors will be speaking about their first-hand experience working in the Croix des Bouquets Field Hospital, where they have been living and working in tents, seeing and treating hundreds of patients each day since their arrival in Haiti in early February.

These young women physicians who come from Harlem, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island; from Houston, Oakland, and Minnesota are the U.S. part of an international contingent of more than 200 young doctors from 25 different countries, all of them graduates of the Latin American School of Medicine, currently providing medical services in Haiti.

We will also be sharing information about sending humanitarian aid to Haiti: We are glad to let you know that IFCO/Pastors for Peace is collaborating with Local 100 of the Transit Workers Union to organize a container shipment of medical supplies, tents, and cots to Haiti.

According to their brochure, DC-ICE was created by parents in Washington-DC inspired by Shani Davis' performance at the 2006 Olympics.

The program is run by three time Olympic skater, Nathaniel Mills along with other certified coaches and volunteers. Practices are held at the Fort Dupont Ice Arena, DC's only indoor ice arena. The program offers Olympic caliber coaching and training to all students, discounted ice and in-line practice fees, eligibility for speed skate and in-line loans, DC-Ice warm ups and racing uniforms, and tickets to professional sporting events through Most Valuable Kids.

On Friday, February 19th, True Skool's live bucket drummer's will be performing with Radio Milwaukee DJs for a breakdancing battle at the Milwaukee Art Museum! Their performance begins at 9:30, but there will be performances and exhibitions throughout the night, beginning at 5. The theme of tomorrow's MAM After Dark is centered around Street Seen, the museum's current exhibit.

I wanted to pass along an email I received from the Youthaiti listserv, thanking everyone who has been coming to the different events in the city supporting Haiti and the organization's work. With everyone's help, they have raised $7,650! Gigi Pomerantz of Youthaiti will be leaving for Haiti next week. At the OurMilwaukee for Haiti event, they asked for people to donate flashlights, so I will have an update soon on collecting flashlights....

Youthaiti's work:

Youthaiti is a not-for-profit organization that mobilizes financial and human resources to directly engage in the development of youth and sustainable water, sanitation and reforestation efforts in Haiti. Dear Friends of YOUTHAITI -

I want to thank all of you, especially those new to this list, who have come out in Milwaukee over the last 3 weeks to support YOUTHAITI and the work that we do. The Milwaukee community has been incredible in their support. Every time I turn around there is another offer of support for YOUTHAITI's work. Thanks to your generosity we have already sent $7650 in grants down to individuals working in communities both hit directly by the earthquake of January 12 and in communities receiving internally displaced people. We will continue to identify areas of need that are being missed by the large international aid organizations, especially in the rural areas. As promised, 1/2 of all donations received in January and February will go to immediate needs.

In less than one week Joe Wilson and I will be travelling to Haiti to see with our own eyes the situation on the ground. I have read many reports and looked at many photos and videos, but can I really be prepared? We will continue to distribute emergency aid, including over 150 pounds of medications purchased through MAP International, xray film donated by a hospital in Door County, Protein bars, hygiene items and clothing.

The major focus of our trip, however, will be to go outside of Port-au-Prince and identify areas in need of sanitation systems and expanded gardens. Through the generosity of a grant from the Joint Distribution Committee, we will establish a pilot project that we hope will be used throughout the areas where people may resettle. It is so important to create jobs and livelihoods for people to attract them outside of Port-au-Prince for reasons of safety, health and the ability to reconstruct the capitol city.

We will need your continued support throughout this trip and in the coming months and years. Haitians are a strong, resilient people. But the country has been struck a deep wound. By helping people with basic necessities such as sanitation, by teaching simple hygiene techniques and important agricultural principles, we can help them become self-sufficient. We look forward to hearing from you throughout our upcoming travels and going forward.
As we plan for the summer, I invite those who are interested in travelling with us to Haiti to contact me at gigi@youthaiti.org. I promise that if you join us on a trip to work alongside the people of Haiti, you will never be the same.

On Saturday, January 30th, Care-A-Lotta, The Bartolotta Restaurants' charitable foundation, hosted a Bead-A-Thon at Bacchus Restaurant in Milwaukee, and called on Milwaukee-area high school students to bead 5,000 bracelets. These bracelets will be sold in all of the Bartolotta Restaurants for $5.00. Bartolotta Restaurants will also be adding a special cocktail made with Rhum Barbancourt, a Haitian rum, and a dessert inspired by Haitian cuisine to their menus. Proceeds will be donated to a group of orphanages in Haiti.

Thank you Care-A-Lotta, the Loose Bead Society, and the staff at Bacchus Restaurant for putting together the event!

The True Skool Urban Arts After-School Program is now accepting applications for their 2010 Urban Arts Program; however, spots are filling up very quickly, and they keep the program small to allow more individual attention for each student. Classes run every Wednesday after school from 3:30-8pm.

Teens ages 14-19 are eligible to apply. All classes and programs are FREE!

True Skool Activities include:

-Print screen projects where you will create your own canvasses and clothes to market and sell.

-Stencil workshops.

-Build your own canvass workshops.

-Help with planning True Skool's 2010 Block Party/ Graffology and other exciting events!

Care-a-Lottas, the Bartolotta Charitable Foundation, is preparing to launch a significant fundraising effort for a group of orphanages in Haiti. It will be a month long campaign encompassing our foundation, our employees and our guests. Our goal is to have 200 high school students participate in beading 5,000 bracelets. All of the supplies have been donated, so 100% of the profits from sales of the bracelets will go to people in need.

Each participant will receive 2.5 service hours, free soda, snacks and a t-shirt. Space is available on a first come, first serve basis and is sure to fill up quickly. In order to participate, you will need to email Natalie at natalieczarkowski@bartolottas.com. You will be confirmed upon notification from her.

IMF Loan to Haiti...

The IMF has promised an interest free loan of $100 million in emergency funds... In this CNN article, the head of the IMF, Dominique Strauss-Kahn says, "The most important thing is that the IMF is now working with all donors to try to delete all the Haitian debt, including our new loan. If we succeed- and I'm sure we will succeed- even this loan will turn out to be finally a grant, because all the debt will have been deleted." Why can't the IMF just give the money as a grant in the first place? What are they doing to ensure that debt will be deleted, so that Haiti does not fall even further into debt?

He is later quoted as saying, "And so the question was: were we going to do nothing or give a loan? We decided to give a loan- but a zero-interest loan with a long grace period." But a loan nonetheless...And how do you define "a long grace period"?

On Friday, January 22nd, George Clooney will host a commercial free telethon event. Wyclef will be broadcasting from NYC, and Anderson Cooper will be broadcasting from Haiti. Many people have been asking about service trips to Haiti. Organizations are mainly seeking medical professionals at the moment. An influx of untrained volunteers will place even greater strain on resources that are already scarce, such as food, water, shelter, etc; however, the site posted above does include organizations that are accepting applications for volunteers. Keep them in mind for the future! They also include places for you to volunteer your time in your community, working packaging centers and phone banks.

The tragic Earthquake in Yele, Haiti was something that touched the hearts of many minority students. As we tune in to our local new stations we seek to make a difference, as we know that this heartbreak could be happening to any of us. As First Wave students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison we use Hip-hop and other forms of art to raise public consciousness and self-awareness. We choose to donate our talents to the suffering people in Haiti. We know how far a single dollar can go and what we can achieve by working as one to send relief to our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
This Just Bust will be a Haiti relief show in partnership withUWHIPHOP and INKREDCLOTHING. This production will be a free fundraising event.
Hip-hop, Poetry, and musical performances will be brought to the stage while during intermission merchandise and baked goods will be sold with all proceeds going towards the Haiti Relief Fund of First Wave's choice. We ask our venders and musicians to donate their merchandise (books, CDs, etc) and ask our people to simply give what they can and bring a little change($) for Yele, Haiti because every little bit counts. Lets work together to give a hand. Through art there is change. The date and time for the show is pending.

Alvin Ailey : Benefit for Peniel Guerrier

For everyone in New York, I received an email yesterday from the Alvin Ailey Extension. They are having a benefit for the family of Peniel Guerrier, the Haitian Folkloric Dance teacher at the Alvin Ailey Extension. Like so many, Peniel lost many members of his family and many others are homeless. The event will feature performances by Alvin Ailey teachers and students.

Haitian Americans United for Change- Long Island Coalition for Haiti's Relief

The Long Island Coalition for Haiti's Relief is a collaboration of non-profits, faith-based organizations, and government offices that have created a phase model for relief. They are currently in Phase 1, collecting important goods to send to Haiti. I called the office this morning, and they are accepting shipments to the location if you are not in the New York area (hint, hint Milwaukee:)). Here is the body of the email sent by Haitian-Americans United for Change on Thursday, January 14th:

"Suffolk County, NY- Long Island Coalition for Haiti's Relief is a collaboration of faith base organizations, local not-for-profit organizations, Congressman Steve Israel's office, the Suffolk County Executive's office, and the Suffolk County Legislature. The coalition has created an initiative which includes phases to assist survivors of the devastating earthquake that hit Port au- Prince and Carrefour, Haiti, Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Phase I addresses the most immediate needs of the survivors. The coalition is seeking the public's help in collecting specific medical supplies in addition to monetary donations to purchase medical supplies not received.

The International Rescue Committee: The International Rescue Committee is currently accepting donations for relief efforts in Haiti. In addition to working in refugee camps throughout the world, the IRC helps refugees in the US by providing ESL classes, employment training, job placement, and with housing.

They are also always looking for volunteers to teach their ESL classes, as well as people who speak multiple languages to help families with their transition and move to the US.

Since moving back to Milwaukee in July, it has been my goal to create a way for Milwaukee's young people to exchange ideas and information on the organizations, events, and people that are working to make a difference in this city. With the events in Haiti on Tuesday, I have decided to finally get myself in gear and start by sharing ways to help with the Earthquake relief efforts. As I find out more, I will share events and drives in Milwaukee. Zanmi means friend or supporter in Kreyol. Haiti is a nation that has been through so much and we need to share our support. If anyone knows of events going on here, or organizations you believe could use the support, please share.

Also, it is important to remember that unfortunately, relief is not going to be quick, and this is going to be going on for a long time. Do not let anyone forget in the months and weeks and years to come! Haiti has been pushed aside and ignored and taken advantage of for far too long.
